Coal
After many years as the dirty and unloved fossil fuel coal may be
poised for its day in the sun. As shortages of other fossil fuels
come to light, the world will be forced to turn to coal based energy
solutions out of necessity. Coal�s low cost, abundance and security
(the US has the world�s largest coal reserves) will lead to its
renaissance. New technologies such as clean coal and old
technologies such as coal to liquids production will drive future
growth making coal an exciting investment opportunity.
Oil
As
discussed under our Peak Oil section oil is facing unprecedented
supply concerns. The likelihood that production can increase
significantly from existing levels seems more and more unlikely as
additional evidence comes to light. These production limitations
are coming at a time when the demand for oil by developing nations
is surging. Long term shortages of oil will produce a whole new
paradigm of oil pricing based on supply not demand. Since virtually
all aspects of our modern economy depend is one way or another on
oil the ramifications are wide ranging and disturbing.
Uranium
While often demonized, nuclear power is among the cleanest and
cheapest of energy sources. Unfavourable public perception has
stunted the growth of nuclear for the past two decades. However, as
fossil fuel supplies become more expensive and less reliable nuclear
becomes a much more acceptable option. Many nuclear projects are
now under construction worldwide and the future of nuclear power and
therefore uranium looks very promising.
Alternatives
Wind, solar, geothermal and bio-fuel technologies (among others) are
just breaking into the market. While most are uneconomical compared
to traditional methods of energy production they are a rapidly
growing segment of our energy mix. Opportunities exist in all these
areas and will only get more lucrative as the cost of traditional
energy sources continue to rise.
